China's seasonally adjusted S&P Global Manufacturing PMI dropped to 49.9 in November from 50.6 in the previous value, indicating contraction, and falling short of market expectations of only 50.5, according to a joint report by RatingDog and S&P Global. This reflected the first deterioration in manufacturing activity since July, despite a low magnitude.

New orders growth eased to near stagnation, and production also ceased expanding, although export orders continued to grow. Weaker new business growth prompted Chinese manufacturers to reduce employment and purchasing, and cautiously control inventory. This resulted in some job losses and layoffs, leading to a slight dip in total employment. The decline in capacity resulted in a fourth consecutive month of increase in backlogged business. In spite of this, business confidence improved MoM.

In November, the average purchase price for Chinese manufacturers drifted higher. Surveyed companies broadly indicated that rising metal prices were the main reason for the higher input costs. However, the rate of increase in purchase prices slowed to its lowest level in five months, and was slim. With cost hikes decelerating, manufacturers opted to absorb the cost pressures themselves and offered further sales incentives, weighing down on average selling prices in November. Intensified competition among manufacturers also caused export prices to sink, though narrowly.
