The Hong Kong Police Force and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) established a joint task force to conduct a comprehensive criminal investigation into the deadly fire incident at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, said Chief Secretary for Administration, Chan Kwok-ki. Where the situation on-site permitted, the police collected scaffold net samples from about 20 different locations at Wang Fuk Court over the past two days, Chan reported. Among these, seven samples from Wang Tai House, Wang Tao House, Wang Yan House, and Wang Chi House were found failing fire-retardant standards. Secretary for Security, Tang Ping-keung, separately indicated that there is currently suspicion that non-compliant scaffold nets were mixed with compliant ones. The initial findings that the scaffold nets met standards were due to someone replacing damaged protective nets with non-compliant ones during Typhoon Ragasa. To evade inspections, compliant scaffold nets were installed at easily accessible lower levels and scaffold feet, while non-compliant nets were placed at higher positions only reachable by firefighters, leading to a deceptive situation, Tang explained. To date, the police have arrested 13 individuals on charges of manslaughter, including 12 men and 1 woman, aged between 40 and 77. These individuals are involved with major contracting companies, engineering consultancy firms, subcontracted scaffolding companies, and subcontracted external wall engineering companies. The investigation is still ongoing, and further arrests are not ruled out. AASTOCKS Financial News Website: www.aastocks.com |
