HK Labour Department: 5 Contractor Workers Perish in No. 5 Alarm Fire in Tai Po

A spokesperson for the Labour Department of Hong Kong said today (1st) that, according to preliminary investigations, five contractor workers (three men and two women) were perished in the No. 5 alarm fire in Tai Po.

The Labour Department was deeply saddened by the death of contractor workers in the incident, and extended heartfelt condolences to their families, wishing the injured workers a speedy recovery.

The Labour Department is highly concerned about this fire incident, and is conducting a joint investigation with other departments.

The Labour Department emphasized that all contractors across Hong Kong must pay close attention to fire risks at construction sites, especially enhancing fire safety of scaffolding, ensuring that related materials meet fire safety standards, and strengthening site safety measures, such as clearing sundries from scaffolding and strictly prohibiting smoking within the construction site area.

The Labour Department has proactively contacted employers, injured employees, and the families of the deceased to provide appropriate assistance and closely follow up on the cases. The Labour Department will also assist the families of the deceased in applying for relevant emergency relief funds and refer them to the Social Welfare Department for support services.
